Caffeine Can It Boost Your Memory?

Coffee, caffeine just like chocolate quite often receives negative publicity. While in some cases and in excess consumption these can have negative effect on your body, they also have some quite beneficial effects.

I am not going to dispute that there are some people who are more sensitive to negative effect of caffeine then others. As an example excess consumption of caffeine can create nausea, anxiety and quite often will result in an increased heart rate and sometimes it can even cause depression in some people. And chocolate is defiantly not something that should form someone’s diet.

But after years of research scientists have found some interesting facts about caffeine. One example of it is that caffeine blocks effects of a neurotransmitter in the brain, which otherwise makes people feel tired. This is why coffee works quite well to keep us awake. It also increases the release of brain chemical, dopamine and also adrenaline. Dopamine is a chemical which creates a feeling of well being.

There was two major studies conducted one which was a population based study which found that consumption of caffeine containing products like coffee and tea had a protective effect for people who are at risk in developing a liver disease.   Problems that the study participants had and which resulted in the higher risk of liver disease before the study included the following obesity, alcoholism, hepatitis B or some other complications.

The result of the study was quite an interesting one as it showed that people drinking two or more cups of coffee a day had about forty four percent lower chance of liver damaged in comparison to those who consumed no caffeine. Just to make it clear this was not a clinical trial and also the reasons why tea and coffee had that effect is not known. Tea and coffee contain a range of different plant chemicals which potentially could be responsible for that result. There was another study done in 2005 in Norway which had similar results.

Although you may not be at a risk of liver disease caffeine has some other advantages as well. Recent study in Australia showed that caffeine has the potential to enhance short term memory. Research has shown that after consuming coffee there was an increase in brain activity in the part of the brain, which is responsible for your attention and memory. The study which was conducted was a placebo controlled study, which means that some people during the study were not given any caffeine. There was also another study conducted in early 2004 which found that caffeine improves your short term memory.

There are two sides to each story in this world so in my opinion everything is good in moderation as long as you do not abuse any particular substance you will be fine and have a healthy and long life.

Red Espresso : a new coffee-tea hybrid

Like many, I enjoy a good cup of espresso, and other espresso-based drinks (for example cappuccino and caffe latte) every once in a while.  However, not everyone can, or prefers, to drink coffee.

Now there's an alternative called Red Espresso.

What is Red Espresso?

Contrary to the name, Red Espresso is not coffee.  It is actually rooibos tea (sometimes also known as red tea).  Red Espresso has been developed so that it can be a replacement for coffee beans -- so you can use it in espresso machines

Red Espresso produces a crema just like coffee espresso, except that the creme is a deep saffron colour with golden flecks.

What makes Red Espresso special?

Red Espresso is a hybrid between tea and coffee.  It is more robust and flavorful compared to normal tea - it is rich-tasting, full-bodied & smooth with slightly sweet, earthy undertones .  The rooibos plant is native to the Cedarberg Mountains, which lies north of Cape Town in South Africa.  Rooibos tea has been used traditionally in South Africa to treat many ailments, including  colicky stomach cramps,  insomnia, fever, headaches, asthma, digestion problems, and skin disorders.

Red Espresso is  naturally caffeine free, which makes it attractive to a number of people who would otherwise skip coffee, for example pregnant ladies.  Red Espresso also has 5 times more antioxidants than green tea, which makes it a great healthy alternative.

How to brew Red Espresso

Red Espresso is versatile -- you can brew it any way you like.  Aside from espresso machines, you can also prepare Red Espresso drinks using other familiar methods, including, drip / filter coffee machines,  the French Press and the stovetop Moka Pot.

So the next time you consider stopping by your neighborhood coffeehouse for an espresso, do ask them if they have Red Espresso.

Holy JavaBean, Batman - Is Coffee Actually Good For You

Not sure if you are old enough to remember the old "Batman" TV show with Adam West? No matter, the research is in. If you have been feeling guilty about enjoying that morning cup of Joe, don't? Drinking a moderate amount of coffee may actually be good for you.

You are probably aware that your favorite beverage - you know, the one with the caffeine in it - is also enjoyed by literally billions of people all over the planet each and every day. And there have been many reports and research articles written about the hazards of drinking too much of it. But take heart! There is also research that supports the healthful aspects of drinking coffee.

Our blessed java bean is among the most studied commodities by scientists. Here is some evidence to suggest that we may actually reap benefits rather than kill ourselves by ingesting moderate amounts of coffee (an average of about 4 cups per day):

  • Increased alertness - this is an obvious benefit that few will dispute - the effect of the caffeine in a regular serving or cup of 60-100 mg of caffeine has been proven to increase alertness and reduce tiredness. It especially helps in situations when you may be fatigued, such as when driving. The benefit here may be that it keeps you from falling asleep and having an accident or even a fatality.
  • Type II Diabetes - according to an article at positivelycoffee.org, there is research that suggests "that coffee drinking may be protective against the development of Type II diabetes". While further research is necessary to determine exactly why, it is thought that there is another natural ingredient other than the caffeine that is responsible for helping with diabetes.
  • Physical performance enhancer - again from positivelycoffee.org, research shows that there is a benefit from drinking caffeinated beverages prior to exercise that helps your performance and endurance. If the caffeine increases your ability to exercise longer, the end result is that it enhances your body's health because of the added exercise.
  • Parkinson's disease - from coffeescience.org - there is a large body of study that has reported that coffee and other caffeinated drinks can reduce the risk of developing Parkinson's Disease.

So, is coffee good for your health? If you search the Internet, you will find many more health benefits for your favorite drink suggesting that it may be. There has been a bunch of negative press, but much of that has been either misquoted or it refers to more than average consumption of the heavenly brew.

Popular Types And Flavors Of Coffee

Some of the most popular types of coffee are the most simple and least complicated to make. Perhaps the reason they are the most popular is because they take so little time to make and can be made in just about any type of coffee maker you can find. Those types of coffee are flavored, non-flavored with milk, and completely black.

Flavored coffee has become more and more popular over the past few years because of the different types of wonderful flavors that are now available like hazelnut, vanilla cream, Irish cream, and more. These coffee flavors have helped make coffee drinking more and more enjoyable for many around the world. These types of flavored coffee, when topped of with a little creamer, can be a delicious drink for anyone who enjoys coffee with a little extra taste.

Another popular type of coffee is the traditional coffee mixed with a little bit of milk or non flavored creamer. This is referred to as a latte. This is typically one of the more popular types of coffee because it still has that traditional coffee taste, but with a little more mild flavor. So for those who enjoy the real taste of coffee, but are not so fond of the sharp taste that black coffee provides, this would be the preferred alternative.

Finally, black coffee is one of the other more popular coffee types. Perhaps the reason it is popular is because of the traditional taste that it provides. The dark rich taste is often preferred by many because it does not contain any added flavors or tastes. The traditional flavor of black coffee has been around the longest as it has been a traditional drink for hundreds of years.

Whatever your favorite may be, there is sure to be a taste that will suit you and your drinking preferences. If you’re not sure exactly which type is your favorite, perhaps you will be willing to sample the different types to find a type that suits you.

What is Gourmet Coffee?

For people who savor the taste and the richness of coffee, then there is more to their experience than just a morning wake-up call. To these people, drinking coffee is about the flavor, the scent, and the warmth. Often, these people will be the owners of specialty coffee makers and coffee grinders, and generally, they will drink gourmet coffee.

As you may suspect, the cost of this specialty coffee can be quite a bit higher than the standard grounds or beans, however, many people feel that the cost is far outweighed by the taste and the experience of drinking it. Others may wonder just why it costs more.

Why is gourmet coffee so special? It begins with how the beans are grown. Coffee beans are grown on large plantations in various parts of the world. The soil types, the amount of sun or rain, and the types of coffee planted will all have a great effect on the taste of the end product.

Many coffee growers find ways to weed out any standard coffees and to create hybrid plants that provide rich, flavored options. Since these types of coffee beans are less prolific and harder to grow, they are considered gourmet.

While there are many flavors of gourmet coffee, there are certain kinds that are most popular. You may have tried a few flavors before, and most likely, you have seen these favorite options.

Many people enjoy French Vanilla gourmet coffees because they are much softer on the palate than the bitterness of standard coffee. French Vanilla coffee combines the taste of the coffee beans with a creamy vanilla flavor. This choice is a favorite among many coffee drinkers who enjoy something rich and not as strong.

People who prefer something stronger may choose Hazelnut because these coffees include a strong bite, even more than regular black coffee. Hazelnut coffees are dark, rich and very strong. Many choices of gourmet coffee combine the Hazelnut with other flavors like chocolate or vanilla.
If you enjoy a bit of a fruity taste, you may enjoy options, which include raspberry or blueberry. These choices provide a mix of the richness of coffee along with a bit of sweet from the fruit.

Gourmet coffee is pricier than standard coffee, but it provides a flavor and a taste experience that you will not find elsewhere. There are many gourmet choices, and coffee enthusiasts could most likely name three or four that they favor above all the others. Once you begin to enjoy the coffee, you will be able to find the best choices for you.
